used to live in Laguna Beach, CA. So eclectic, fun waves, and amazing sunsets. This piece recreates a sunset I witnessed from my place on Anita St. The amazing thing is they wouldn't be as grand without the smog. Keep driving those cars so I can keep painting those sunsets!

Located in the collection at the California Surf Museum, this piece attempts to ask the viewer, can I find a reason to take action? The viewer is asked to find a memory they have of Trestles or San Onofre. If the memory pleases the viewer, is that enough of a reason to fight? The "241" barrel of oil will ignite the destruction of a national treasure. The fins are painted symbolically promote the only faction putting it on the line for this cause, the surf riders. There is chaos ensuing with this issue while Trestles and San Onofre cling to the trees in hopes of not being swept away by the winds of progress. See it?

My flagship painting for this series, I love the sky. I have been playing around with layering the colors in different orders to give different effects. Not always putting dark down first can be fun. It gives a much different feeling of space when you experiment with the order of paint when dealing with sunsets. I have used the image of an empty boat in a few pieces. There is something rather serene seeing an empty boat in the water or line up. It invites you to get in.

The Surfrider foundation commissioned this painting from me for a fundraiser to save the Gaviota coast. I love to paint but unfortunately we have to even raise money to fight against enviro-villains. The coast north of Santa Barbara is threatened by a large home development. I wanted to show the raw beauty of the coastline. The streams of white raising up represent how the pristine coastline is slowly evaporating away.

I find so many spots of beauty around California and abroad that are in danger of being sold off for one reason or another. Usually in the name of the almighty dollar. I wish they had control over themselves to turn horrid looking and dead when the buyers or investors come around to look, then return to their beautiful state when they depart. There is a set of breaks at Trestles that few sections of coast anywhere in the world rivals. The breaks from Cottons to Old Man's represent a coastline of limitless possibilities. Many a surf session has been had at sunset on this strip. Maybe this should be called 'Sunset Strip"?

Is it a volcanic eruption in a sky of blue? Or is it a sunset behind blue clouds. On Moorea the mix of colors was outstanding. I used the wood grain to form one of the volcanic mountains seen on the island. The rise of land out of the sea is very dramatic. The hills are very lush. In fact while I was in Moorea, there was a "forest fire" that burned the entire time. It only burned underbrush and never really got out of control. But you could hear it crackling up on the hill. This painting has many of those feelings included.

My favorite surf spot is called Churches. It is one of the right point breaks in the Trestles area. It is named Church because of the cross that sits on the hill that identifies your location. If you sit right in front of the cross you can catch these perfect inside rights on a NW swell as they peel into the cove. In the painting there is an image of the power plant denoting how silly it is that that isn't enough of an impact that they need to add a toll road on top of it. If the 241 happens, then this could be but a memory. So go to church and pray.

One of my trips to Hawaii was fantastic. Every where I went there was some sort of secret beauty about the place. Everything just had a certain energy about it. There were the outrigger canoes (pictured on painting in toner transfer), the tropical flora, and the aqua water. I wanted the flora to be a central theme in this piece as it is special in Hawaii also. You can even see the wood stain in the shape of the islands.

Sometimes the best finds are found deep in somewhere. Deep in the jungle, deep up river, deep under water, deep in the mist...you get the idea. I wanted this piece to be a cross between what you might see before you go looking and then what you may find when you look. I numbered the found items on the painting as though they were a catalog in some researchers journal. I attempted to show tropical western Africa with the blue water, jungle and the rain storm.

In recent times I have decided to work in the symbolism of surfing into my acrylic painting. One of the main symbols, or icons of surfing is the "fin" or "skeg". It is essential to the concept of wave riding, especially while standing. Placement Drift is a term I use for long boarding. It refers to fin placement, drifting right or left and how those two interact. Here I combine that aspect of surfing in the art, with a little abstract MC Escher (if he did surf art) with the palm trees.

On a recent 'trip' to the south Pacific, this wonderfully active thunderstorm appeared at at sunset. It was approaching. The palm trees almost appeared to be lifting out of the ground. Waves were breaking on the horizon, deep blue water in the channel, everything was 'deep'.
